Rivers State proposes annual "Sports Tournament" for grassroots development

Posted : 11 July 2024

Gov. Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has announced that annual sporting tournaments will begin in the state as part of the government’s efforts to enhance grassroots sports development.

Fubara made this announcement at the official trophy and medal presentation ceremony for various teams in Rivers at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

The teams include Rivers United Under-17 Youth League, Rivers Hoopers Basketball Club, Rivers Angels Football Club, Rivers Table Tennis Team, Judo, Chess, Volleyball, Para sports, and Hockey teams.

The governor also assured that his administration would provide platforms for youth to develop their talents and achieve their dreams.

He directed the State Commissioner for Sports, Christopher Green, to design the competition structure and coordinate with his office to kickstart the tournament.

Fubara added that outstanding performers would be celebrated at an awards ceremony in December.

Addressing the winners, the governor expressed delight over the trophies presented by the teams, considering himself fortunate to be the governor of Rivers.

Fubara emphasized that investing state resources in enhancing the well-being of the people is more beneficial than risking youth involvement in negative activities.

He praised the Sports Commissioner and everyone who contributed tirelessly to bring pride to Rivers.

Fubara also appreciated the management of the various teams, urging them to continue their efforts in bringing honor to the state.

He announced cash prizes ranging from N2.5 million to N30 million for individual and group winners.

Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, Christopher Green, commented that the competitions were challenging but successful due to the support of the governor and the determination of the players.

Green mentioned that the teams won gold, silver, and bronze medals in their respective male and female categories.

He also highlighted that Team Rivers set new sporting records, particularly in the Open Chess game.

Chief Adokiye Amiesimaka, Chairman of the Governing Council of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, acknowledged that the achievements being celebrated were profound and unprecedented in Nigeria's sporting history.

Amiesimaka thanked Gov. Fubara for his support to the teams, which greatly boosted their morale.

He encouraged the players to continue striving for more achievements in their respective sports.
