Rennes kicked off their Ligue 1 campaign with an impressive 3-0 victory over Lyon at home on Sunday. The hosts established an early advantage with two goals in quick succession during the first half, thanks to Benjamin Bourigeaud and Amine Gouiri. Bourigeaud opened the scoring with a deflected free-kick, and just two minutes later, Gouiri capitalized on a defensive error by Lyon’s Moussa Niakhate to double the lead.
The second half saw Rennes create numerous opportunities, though they failed to add to their tally until injury time. Rennes' experienced goalkeeper, Steve Mandanda, made a crucial save to deny Georges Mikautadze from the penalty spot in the 72nd minute. Henrik Meister then sealed the win with a goal in stoppage time, driving the ball home to cap off a dominant performance.
In other Ligue 1 action, Auxerre secured a dramatic 2-1 win over Nice with a late goal by substitute Lasso Coulibaly, while Lens edged out newly-promoted Angers 1-0 thanks to Wesley Said’s skillful finish. Nantes and Toulouse played out a goalless draw, and Montpellier and Strasbourg shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw, with both teams scoring in the second half.
