Chelsea defender Renato Veiga has completed a loan move to Juventus for the remainder of the season. The 21-year-old joined Chelsea from Basel in the summer for £11.8 million and has made 18 appearances, though he has started only one Premier League match. Juventus will cover his wages and pay a £3.8 million loan fee, with no option to purchase included in the agreement.
Veiga, a Portugal international, reportedly became frustrated with being deployed as a left-back at Chelsea, as he prefers playing as a center-back. He had also attracted interest from Borussia Dortmund as he sought more game time to maintain his place in the Portuguese national squad.
Despite Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca’s attempts to convince Veiga to stay, the player opted for a move to Juventus to gain more opportunities in his preferred position.
Juventus, currently sitting fifth in Serie A, have guaranteed themselves a spot in the Champions League play-offs. The Italian club hopes Veiga’s arrival will bolster their defensive options as they aim to climb higher in the league standings.
