It was a disappointing end for one of Nigeria's representatives in the 2024/2025 CAF Champions League as Remo Stars FC were eliminated by AS FAR of Morocco amid alleged controversial officiating.
The result from Rabat means that only two Nigerian teams remain on the continent. The 2023-2024 NPFL season runners-up, Remo Stars Football Club’s journey in the CAF Champions League has come to an end, following a similar fate for another Nigerian club, El-Kanemi Warriors, who were also knocked out by AS Dadje of Benin Republic.
For Remo Stars, the elimination came at the hands of another Moroccan side, AS FAR, who defeated them 2-0 in the second leg on Sunday in Rabat, the Moroccan capital.
The Sky Blue Stars had a slim 2-1 lead heading into the return leg, but the Royal Armed Forces team scored two goals to advance with a 3-2 aggregate win.
Remo Stars defended throughout the game but were punished in the 59th minute by Joel Beya, the Congolese import who had scored AS FAR’s lone goal in Ikenne the previous Sunday.
Amine Zouhzouh doubled AS FAR’s advantage with five minutes remaining on the clock, converting a penalty.
El-Kanemi Warriors FC were already eliminated in the first round of the CAF Confederation Cup, and now Remo Stars Football Club’s poor performance in Morocco has compounded the woes of Nigerian football.
Only Rangers International FC of Enugu in the CAF Champions League and Enyimba Football Club in the CAF Confederation Cup remain in continental competitions.
