Remo Stars have emerged as the winners of the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, courtesy of a lone goal victory over Niger Tornadoes.
Tension and apprehension were high as Ikenne fans flocked to the Remo Stars FC stadium to watch the decisive 2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 35.
The Sky Blue Stars have been chasing the elusive crown since the 2021-2022 season when they finished third on the NPFL log.
Remo Stars tried again in the 2022/2023 NPFL season but were narrowly beaten by just one goal, falling short of becoming Nigerian champions, a title ultimately won by Rivers United FC.
The 2023/2024 season also saw Remo Stars fall short in the abridged league format, with Enyimba International FC winning, while Remo Stars finished in second place.
Not leaving anything to chance, Remo Stars have finally claimed the league trophy this season, securing the title with three matches to spare after opening an unassailable 10-point gap. With just nine points left, they will ultimately finish with one more point than the second-placed team, Rivers United FC.
Remo Stars also made history as the first club from Ogun State to emerge as league champions since the creation of the state on February 3, 1976.
Furthermore, more records can be set for Remo Stars if they manage to earn nine more points from their remaining three matches, which could see them exceed the 77-point mark set by the current runners-up, Rivers United. Rivers United set this record in the 2021-2022 season, when they achieved 77 points in a season, a record since the 20-team format was institutionalized 21 years ago.
Remo Stars still have more records to break. Their 1-0 victory over Niger Tornadoes is their 21st win of the season.
They need two more wins to equal the 23 established by the Port Harcourt sides, Dolphins in the 2009/2010 season, and Rivers United in the 2021/2022 season.
