Smarting from their 1-0 victory over visiting River United on the Valentine's Day special, Sporting Lagos FC will hope to pick up more of their season to reinvent themselves into reckoning after a disappointing first stanza of the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
The Tech Boys have had rough patches in their first experience in the top-flight league coming after some impressive wins. Then, the fortunes of the club started to nosedive until it reached its peak somewhere around Match Day 14, when the club had to fight for their lives in the murky relegation waters.
However, the Tech Boys' management decided to do something to salvage the club, and some interesting signings were made.
One of the interesting signings is the return of Chukwuemeka Kalu, who claimed his mission was to help the club maintain their top-flight status.
Kalu rejoined the modest side in a deal until the end of the season.
The player was previously in the books of Sporting Lagos for the 2022–23 season.
“It’s not easy to make a return to the club; I want to work hard and help the club improve our position on the table.
“The recent victory against Rivers United will boost the team’s chances of going forward in the league.”
Sporting Lagos will welcome Bendel Insurance to the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Sunday.
Last season, Sporting Lagos spent most of the season's battle in the mid-table until the team went on a six-match winless streak that moved them into the relegation zone.
At the end of the first stanza, Sporting Lagos FC won just a paltry five matches from 19, accumulating eight losses and six draws with 21 points, the same as three other clubs down the ladder on the 16th position (Akwa United FC), 17th position (Niger Tornadoes), and Gombe United FC on the 18th position.
At the twilight of last season's match, Sporting Lagos playing away to Bendel Insurance ended in one of their biggest losses in the league, accounting for a 1-3 bashing.
Now, as the Benin Arsenals will come calling, the Tech Boys will have to brace up because the encounter won't be an easy one in Lagos.
Head to head:
The only game to have existed so far between Sporting Lagos FC and Bendel Insurance ended in a 3-1 win for the Benin Arsenals.
Prediction:
The game might end in a draw.
