The Super Eagles of Nigeria took sweet revenge on the Black Galaxies of Ghana on Saturday, securing a place in the 2025 CHAN tournament with a 3-1 victory in the second leg at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.
Imail Sadiq opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 18th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error, and just three minutes later, captain Nduka Junior doubled the lead, capitalizing on a loose ball from a Nigeria corner kick to stylishly score. Before halftime, the Super Eagles added a third goal, with Savior Isaac converting in the 24th minute after another sloppy defensive lapse by Ghana.
Stephen Amankona pulled one back for Ghana in the 73rd minute when the home defense was caught off guard. The first leg, played at Baba Yara Stadium in Ghana, had ended goalless.
The two coaches had promised victory for their teams at a press conference in Uyo on Friday. Ghanaian coach Mas Dramani, who had been hopeful after the first-leg draw, said, "We created far more chances and were unlucky not to score." Meanwhile, Nigeria's coach, Daniel Ogunmodede, emphasized that Nigeria was "resetting history" and focusing on securing victory, even training for penalties.
Nigeria's qualification marks their return to the tournament finals, which will take place in February 2025. Ghana, historically a thorn in Nigeria's side, had previously denied the Super Eagles a place in the CHAN finals in 2001 and 2023. They also stopped Nigeria’s 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign through the away-goals rule after a 1-1 draw in Abuja.
Looking at their recent encounters, Nigeria and Ghana have met five times, with notable results including a 1-1 draw in a 2022 World Cup qualifier, and a 2-0 win for Ghana in the first leg of the 2022 CHAN match. Ghana eventually advanced after a 5-4 penalty shootout victory in the second leg.
The 8th CHAN tournament will be hosted by Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya from February 1 to 28, 2025.
