Record seeking Equatorial Guinea set to make fifth appearance in 2024 AFCON

Posted : 31 December 2023

As Equatorial Guinea prepares to participate in the 2024 AFCON in Cote d'Ivoire for the fifth time in history, their primary focus will be on surpassing the achievement of their fourth-place finish in 2015.

Equatorial Guinea, represented by the Nzalang Nacional, is attending its fourth AFCON, and they have left a lasting impression.

Coached by the experienced Juan Micha Obiang, one notable aspect of this small country is their consistent advancement from the AFCON group stage.

Their poorest performance resulted in a quarterfinal berth, achieved in 2012 when they co-hosted the event and in 2021 in Cameroon. They even secured a fourth-place finish in 2015 when hosting the tournament. It is not inconceivable that a team that has eliminated past champions such as Algeria, Tunisia, and Senegal might repeat such feats.

The captain of Equatorial Guinea, Emilio Nsue, formerly of Middlesbrough and Birmingham, will lead the team. The 'National Thunder' is the only Spanish-speaking nation on the continent and aims to surpass their semi-finals appearance in 2015.

Captain Nsue will rely on players like former West Ham midfielder Pedro Obiang and Club Africain star Federico Bikoro, with most of the squad playing in the lower divisions of Spain.

Despite their size, Equatorial Guinea is undefeated in 2023 and enters the tournament in better form than any of their Group A counterparts.

In 2023, the West African side defeated AFCON regulars Tunisia, as well as Namibia, Liberia, and Botswana, conceding only three goals throughout the year.

Equatorial Guinea, with a population smaller than Latvia, has demonstrated that Juan Micha can organize a solid defense and achieve positive results. Although placed in a challenging group, it would not be surprising to see Micha's side advance to the Quarter-Finals.
