Real Sociedad secured the top spot in Champions League Group D with a goalless draw against Inter Milan at the San Siro stadium. The LaLiga side, already assured of a place in the last 16, finished on 12 points, the same as Inter, but claimed first place on goal difference.
Despite a dominant possession game by Real in the first half without a shot on goal, Inter failed to capitalize on their single chance just before the break. The draw means Real Sociedad progresses to the knockout stages as group leaders for the first time.
Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi expressed sheer joy at winning the group, stating, "This objective (winning the group) was a bit complicated at the beginning, but once we got going, we achieved it. It’s incredible."
The second half saw Inter become more dangerous, especially with the introduction of Serie A top scorer Lautaro Martinez, but they couldn't break the deadlock. Real Sociedad thought they had a penalty, disallowed by VAR, and Takefusa Kubo received a booking for simulation. Inter manager Simone Inzaghi expressed satisfaction with finishing unbeaten and reaching the round of 16 for the third consecutive year.
In the other Group D fixture, Benfica secured third place with a 3-1 victory over RB Salzburg, earning them four points and progression to the Europa League knockout stages on goal difference. The draw for the Champions League round of 16 will take place on Monday.
