Real Madrid's perfect La Liga record shattered by Atletico Madrid: Ancelotti under fire
Posted : 26 September 2023
Real Madrid's flawless start to the Spanish league season came to an end as they fell 3-1 to Atletico Madrid in a high-stakes derby clash. The defeat prompted significant criticism directed at coach Carlo Ancelotti, with accusations that his tactical system was at fault.
Prior to this match, Real Madrid had won all five of their league games, but their perfect record was shattered at the hands of their city rivals. Barcelona, the defending champions, maintained their top position in La Liga.
Ancelotti faced severe scrutiny after the derby loss, particularly from Madrid-affiliated media outlets. Alvaro Benito, a former club player, criticized Ancelotti's system, stating that it caused Real Madrid to struggle against Atletico.
The tactical issues were evident on the pitch as Atletico dominated play. Despite Real Madrid having more possession, Atletico created more goal-scoring opportunities and netted two quick goals. Jude Bellingham, who had performed well in previous matches, found it difficult to make an impact against Diego Simeone's well-organized defense.
Carlo Ancelotti took responsibility for the defeat, acknowledging that the three goals they conceded were similar and resulted from poor defensive positioning. He believed that his game plan was not the issue but admitted he could have done better.
When asked about Luka Modric's substitution, Ancelotti refrained from singling out a specific player, stating that the entire team had struggled. He acknowledged the strength of Atletico Madrid's defense, making it challenging for Real Madrid to break through.
Atletico Madrid started the game strongly, scoring two precise goals in the opening 18 minutes. Alvaro Morata netted the first goal in the 4th minute, taking advantage of a defensive lapse. Antoine Griezmann added the second with a header, capitalizing on Real's defensive vulnerability.
Real Madrid managed to pull one back when Toni Kroos scored from outside the area in the 35th minute, but Atletico's Morata completed his brace with a header in the first minute of the second half.
This defeat dropped Real Madrid to third place in the league standings. Their upcoming matches include hosting Las Palmas and facing Girona, the current second-placed team, who remain undefeated this season. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid is set for an away game against Osasuna in the next round.
