Real Madrid Withdraws from FIFA Club World Cup

Posted : 10 June 2024

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has announced that the club will not participate in FIFA's inaugural Club World Cup tournament next summer, citing a lack of financial incentive. The expanded competition, scheduled for June and July 2025 in the United States, will feature 32 teams from various continents, with Real Madrid among the qualified teams.

Despite securing their spot by winning the Champions League titles in 2022 and 2024, Ancelotti revealed in an interview with Italian newspaper Il Giornale that Real Madrid, along with other unnamed clubs, are opting out. Ancelotti highlighted financial concerns, stating that the compensation offered by FIFA doesn't match the value of a single Real Madrid match.

The revamped FIFA Club World Cup aims to replicate the success of prestigious club competitions like the Champions League and Copa Libertadores. The previous edition in 2023, won by Manchester City, featured only seven teams. The new format includes 12 teams from UEFA, six from CONMEBOL, and others from different confederations.

Criticism against the tournament includes concerns of player workload, but FIFA President Gianni Infantino defended the initiative, stating that FIFA's matches represent a small fraction of the total games played. Ancelotti, who led Real Madrid to a successful season, is currently on holiday and expressed hope of convincing Toni Kroos to reconsider his retirement decision.
