Real Madrid Edge Atletico in Dramatic Shootout as Arsenal, Villa, and Dortmund Advance

Posted : 13 March 2025

Real Madrid secured their place in the Champions League quarterfinals after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Atletico Madrid. The match ended 2-2 on aggregate, but a controversial decision to disallow Julian Alvarez's penalty proved crucial.

Conor Gallagher had given Atletico an early lead, leveling the tie, and Real had a chance to win in regulation time when they were awarded a penalty after Kylian Mbappe was brought down. However, Vinicius Junior missed the spot-kick, sending the match into extra time and eventually penalties.

The shootout turned on Alvarez's penalty, which was ruled out after VAR determined he had accidentally touched the ball twice due to slipping before his strike. Despite Lucas Vazquez missing for Real, Marcos Llorente struck the bar for Atletico, allowing Antonio Rudiger to seal victory for the reigning champions.

The win continued Real Madrid’s dominance over Atletico in the Champions League, having eliminated their rivals five times in the last 12 seasons. Real will now face Arsenal in the quarterfinals, marking the clubs' first encounter since 2006. Arsenal progressed comfortably after drawing 2-2 with PSV Eindhoven, having already secured a commanding 7-1 first-leg advantage.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa joined the last eight with a dominant 6-1 aggregate win over Club Brugge, highlighted by Marco Asensio’s brace in a 3-0 second-leg triumph. Villa’s victory sets up a quarterfinal clash against Paris Saint-Germain, where coach Unai Emery will face his former club.

Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund came from behind to defeat Lille 2-1 in France, securing a 3-2 aggregate win. Jonathan David had given Lille the lead, but Emre Can’s penalty and Maximilian Beier’s strike ensured Dortmund’s passage to the next round, where they will face Barcelona.
