Real Madrid Draw Atletico as Champions League Last 16 Takes Shape

Posted : 21 February 2025

Real Madrid will face city rivals Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League round of 16, setting up a high-stakes encounter between the Spanish giants. The reigning champions, who convincingly eliminated Manchester City with a 6-3 aggregate victory in the playoffs, will now aim to extend their dominance over Atletico, having beaten them in the finals of 2014 and 2016.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich have been drawn against Bundesliga challengers Bayer Leverkusen, a team that dethroned them as league champions last season. Despite Bayern currently leading Leverkusen by eight points, their recent goalless league draw suggests a tightly contested tie ahead.

Liverpool, after topping their group, are set to travel to Paris Saint-Germain, who thrashed Brest 10-0 on aggregate in the playoffs. Barcelona, another heavyweight in the competition, will take on Benfica, while Arsenal prepare to face Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven in what promises to be an exciting battle.

Aston Villa, returning to the knockout stage for the first time since 1983, will meet Club Brugge, while last season’s runners-up Inter Milan have been drawn against Feyenoord. The Champions League quarterfinals and semifinals have also been mapped out, with potential matchups adding further intrigue to the knockout rounds.

English clubs have mixed records against their upcoming opponents. Arsenal have never lost at home to PSV and have only been beaten once in their last 14 matches against Dutch teams in the Champions League. Aston Villa, however, have struggled against Belgian sides, winning just one of their past five meetings, with Club Brugge’s only win against English opposition in 16 matches coming against Villa earlier this season.

Liverpool, facing PSG, will be looking for their first away victory against a French club since 2008, while manager Arne Slot remains unbeaten against French sides in European competition. With historic rivalries, tactical battles, and potential upsets looming, the Champions League knockout stage promises to be a thrilling spectacle.
