Real Madrid confirmed Carbajal's injury, then extended his contract

Posted : 06 October 2024

The experienced defender, who sustained a knee injury during Real Madrid's recent 2-0 victory over Villarreal, faces three separate tears in his right leg, ruling him out for the rest of the season. He expressed eagerness to begin his recovery and return stronger, saying, "I can't wait to start rehab and come back like an 'animal.'" Shortly after this unfortunate announcement, the club confirmed that his contract has been extended until the summer of 2026.

Real Madrid confirmed on Sunday what many had feared: Dani Carvajal has suffered a severe injury, ending his season. The team revealed that the defender has a torn anterior cruciate ligament, a torn external lateral ligament, and a torn popliteal tendon, all in his right knee. However, just hours after this grim news, the club also revealed that they had decided to extend his contract through 2026.

Carvajal, 32, injured his knee in extra time during the match against Villarreal, staying down on the pitch for several minutes and eventually leaving the field on a stretcher. Overnight, he took to social media to share his thoughts, stating, "A serious cruciate ligament injury has been diagnosed. I’ll need surgery and will be off the field for a few months. I can't wait to begin rehabilitation and come back stronger. Thanks for all the support."

Since joining the first team in 2013, Carvajal has been a stalwart at Real Madrid, making 427 appearances and winning 26 trophies, including six Champions League titles. Coach Carlo Ancelotti, visibly shaken, spoke about the defender's importance to the team, noting, "He is a critical player for us with his experience, professionalism, and dedication."

Despite the win that kept Real Madrid in close pursuit of Barcelona at the top of La Liga, the mood in the dressing room was somber. Midfielder Federico Valverde, who scored in the match, echoed this sentiment: "In the end, it’s not about the result but the health of our teammates."

Ancelotti avoided commenting on whether the club would be looking to sign a replacement, noting that only Lucas Vazquez is currently available to fill in. "It’s not the time to discuss this," he said. "We trust Lucas, and we’ll consider our options during the upcoming international break."

Carvajal wasn’t the only concern of the match, as Vinicius Jr., who scored Real's second goal, also sustained an injury and was substituted in the 79th minute. Real Madrid later announced he had suffered a neck strain, and his return to action will be closely monitored.
