Barcelona’s recent dip in form has allowed Real Madrid to close the gap at the top of LaLiga, with the defending champions now just two points behind the leaders and a game in hand. Real Madrid comfortably defeated Girona 3-0 last weekend, while Barcelona struggled to a 2-2 draw at Real Betis.
With a crucial match against mid-table Rayo Vallecano approaching, Real Madrid could overtake Barcelona at the top of the standings for the first time this season if they secure all three points.
A victory for Real Madrid would intensify the pressure on Barcelona, who will host Leganes on Sunday. The Catalan side’s once-comfortable lead has been reduced over their last five matches, and third-placed Atletico Madrid, just a point behind, is also poised to take advantage of any further slip-ups.
Barcelona had built a significant lead in October, following their 4-0 thrashing of Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, but their form has since faltered, with just one win in their last five games.
Meanwhile, Jude Bellingham has been a key figure in Real Madrid’s resurgence, having found his scoring touch again after a slow start to the season. The English midfielder has netted in all five of Real Madrid’s recent victories, contributing significantly to their climb up the table.
Bellingham had previously failed to score in the league this season after a stellar 19-goal campaign last year. He also found the net in Real Madrid’s 3-2 Champions League victory over Atalanta on Tuesday, where Kylian Mbappe also scored.
