Real Madrid claims first-leg advantage in Champions League clash with RB Leipzig

Posted : 14 February 2024

Real Madrid secured a crucial advantage in their Champions League last-16 clash with RB Leipzig, thanks to a brilliant goal by Brahim Diaz. The Spanish midfielder, filling in for the injured Jude Bellingham, scored a stunning goal three minutes into the second half, giving Real Madrid a 1-0 win in Germany.

Despite Leipzig's efforts and multiple chances, including a disallowed goal in the early minutes, Real Madrid held on to their lead. The victory puts Real in a favorable position to reach the quarter-finals for the 12th time in the past 14 seasons.

The absence of Jude Bellingham, who missed the game due to injury, was felt by Real Madrid in the first half as they struggled to find attacking fluency. However, Brahim Diaz, Bellingham's replacement, showcased quality and determination throughout the match.

Diaz's moment of brilliance came in the 48th minute when he curled a magnificent shot into the top corner, breaking the deadlock. Despite Diaz's impressive performance, Real Madrid couldn't add to their lead, with Vinicius Jr hitting the post after being set up by Diaz.

Leipzig, despite being clear underdogs, created numerous chances and could have secured at least a draw. Benjamin Sesko had a goal ruled out early in the game, and Leipzig's industrious attacks kept Real Madrid's goalkeeper Andriy Lunin busy.

Lunin, who has become Real's first-choice keeper due to Thibaut Courtois' injury, made crucial saves to maintain a clean sheet. The second leg of the last-16 tie will be hosted by Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu on March 6.

In a match that showcased moments of brilliance, frustration, and injury concerns, Real Madrid secured a narrow victory, leaving the outcome of the tie still uncertain as they head into the return leg.
