Reading Women 0-3 Chelsea Women: Chelsea won Women's Super League with Kerr and Reiten goals
Posted : 27 May 2023
Chelsea won the Women's Super League for a record fourth time in a row after defeating Reading on the last day of the season to send the home team to the Championship Division.
The team captained by Emma Hayes went to Select Car Leasing Stadium with the expectation of winning, which would crown them league and cup champions.
Manchester United, who won 1-0 against Liverpool but finished in second place on the table, was their lone rival.
Sam Kerr and Guro Reiten scored the goals, which was appropriate given how important their efforts this season have been to Chelsea's success. The Blues won easily.
Reiten's cross was headed in by Kerr, and the Norwegian midfielder added a second goal just before halftime by slipping a shot past goalkeeper Grace Moloney. The two collaborated for the early goal.
In the dying moments, Kerr, whose original attempt had been stopped, sprinted through on goal and pushed in the rebound.
The Royals' eight-year tenure in the top division came to an end, however they battled against Premier League clubs' affiliate sides while operating on far greater budgets for several seasons.
The staff and players knelt in despair at the full-time whistle, but their fans lingered to heartily applause after they were unable to repeat the feat this time.
Chelsea, meanwhile, has demonstrated that despite rising competition, their hold on the WSL has not weakened.
