Rayo Vallecano pursuing historic Nigerian winger from Real Madrid

Posted : 07 July 2023
Rayo Vallecano, a La Liga club, is actively negotiating a deal to secure the signing of Marvin Akinlabi, a versatile winger of Spanish-Nigerian-South Korean heritage.

Akinlabi made history by becoming the first Nigeria-eligible player to compete for Real Madrid's first team, making his La Liga debut against Real Sociedad on September 20, 2020.

After spending a season on loan at LaLiga 2 side UD Las Palmas, the 23-year-old winger has returned to Real Madrid.

However, Rayo Vallecano has now set their sights on Akinlabi, along with SD Eibar fullback Álvaro Tejero, as their priority options to reinforce the right-back position.

Rayo Vallecano aims to secure at least one of these players following the departure of Mario Hernández, in order to provide competition for Iván Balliu and offer manager Francisco Rodriguez additional alternatives.

Akinlabi is highly regarded for his significant potential, which was evident during his loan spell at Las Palmas last season.

He made 24 appearances for the club based in the Canary Islands, contributing with one goal and an assist.

As the winner of the 2020 UEFA Youth League with Real Madrid's U19 team, Akinlabi offers versatility in multiple positions.

He is adept at playing as a winger, right-back, right midfielder, and right wingback, making him an attractive prospect for Rayo Vallecano.

Akinlabi's journey in football started with his arrival at Real Madrid on July 1, 2016.

Prior to that, he had stints with the youth teams of Sporting Ciutat de Palma, Tranmere Rovers, SD La Salle, and Es Jonquet Penya Arrabal.
