Raphael Onyedika wins club award following red card incident

Posted : 01 October 2024

Nigerian midfielder Raphael Onyedika has been honored as Club Brugge’s Player of the Month for September, securing 31% of the votes from the fans. This achievement highlights his exceptional performances during the month, where he outperformed his teammates Christos Tzolis and Hans Vanaken to clinch this prestigious accolade.

Onyedika has played a crucial role in the heart of Brugge’s midfield, effectively controlling the game in both league fixtures and European competitions. His impactful performances have been instrumental in helping the club maintain a strong competitive edge throughout September, making him a fitting choice for the award.

However, his month concluded on a somewhat controversial note during a match against Charleroi, which ended in a 1-1 draw. The game took a pivotal turn when Onyedika received a red card in the 55th minute for a tackle that many, including Brugge's head coach Nick Hayen, argued was unwarranted.

The referee ruled Onyedika’s challenge as dangerous, resulting in his dismissal from the match. In his post-match comments, Hayen voiced his disagreement with the officiating decision, stating, “That is never a red card. Yes, he goes in hard, but not with the studs on the ankle. It wasn’t a dangerous action, and he also touched the ball.” He further remarked that a yellow card would have been a more appropriate punishment.

Despite being reduced to ten players, Club Brugge displayed resilience, especially after Charleroi took the lead with a goal from Parfait Guiagon just after halftime. Brugge managed to equalize late in the match, securing a valuable point despite the challenges posed by Onyedika’s red card.

Although the incident overshadowed an otherwise successful month, Onyedika's contributions to the team have solidified his status as a fan favorite. His performances have garnered him significant recognition, highlighting his importance to the squad.

Now, as he faces a suspension that will keep him out of upcoming matches against Royale Union SG, Westerloo, and Anderlecht, Onyedika is eager to return to action. He aims to continue his impressive form and contribute to the success of the Belgian champions upon his return.
