Rangers International FC of Enugu defeated Heartland FC of Owerri 2-1 to take the top spot in the ongoing Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) table after the 27th matchday game.
The Oriental derby match took place at the Enyimba International FC stadium in Aba. Ifeanyi Onyebuchi put Rangers ahead 1-0 before the interval.
Kalu Nweke extended the lead to 2-0 for the Enugu team in the 53rd minute before Chukwuebuka Ogbomna reduced the deficit for Heartland to 2-1 in the 90th minute.
In his post-match interview, Rangers FC coach Fidelis Ilechukwu expressed satisfaction with the result, stating that it was a great motivation for his team.
"I am happy with the progress of my team, excited for the team, management, and everybody. We expected a difficult match, which is why we gave it our all. I knew we were going to win because after the last training session, there was cohesion in the team and everything needed for this match."
"The win is important for us because it shows that Rangers FC is ready for next season, which is what we expected before the second half of the season," he said.
He described Heartland FC as a great team with many chances in the match but unable to convert them.
The coach mentioned that his team had gone unbeaten in nine matches due to their togetherness and the welfare package for the players and the technical team.
"Returning to the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, has been the greatest gift to the team from Governor Peter Mbah and has been one of our motivations."
"We are not a team fighting to win the league but to maintain our status in the league and maybe compete for the league trophy next season," Ilechukwu concluded.
