Rangers manager explains why Dessers missed penalty in shootout

Posted : 16 December 2024

Rangers manager Philippe Clement provided an explanation for why Cyriel Dessers was not included in the penalty shootout during the team’s loss to Celtic in the Scottish League Cup final at Hampden Park on Sunday.

Dessers, the Nigerian striker, had not been part of the starting lineup for six consecutive matches, with Hamza Igamane preferred in his place. Igamane had been in excellent form, scoring five goals in his previous five starts, earning his position in the starting eleven ahead of Dessers.

Dessers entered the match during extra time, replacing Igamane. However, his impact on the field was minimal, and he was booked just a minute after coming on, adding little to the team’s efforts.

With the score level at 3-3 after regular and extra time, the match was decided by penalties. Rangers’ designated penalty takers included James Tavernier, Danilo, Ianis Hagi, Rıdvan Yılmaz, and Jack Butland. Each of them successfully converted their spot kicks, except for Yılmaz.

Celtic, on the other hand, managed to score all of their penalties, securing the victory and lifting the trophy while Rangers came up short in the shootout.

In his post-match comments, Clement explained Dessers’ absence from the penalty takers list. He clarified that Dessers was on the list but was meant to take the sixth penalty kick, had the situation arisen.

Clement further emphasized that Rangers had been practicing penalties throughout the season and noted that Jack Butland had excelled in these drills, which influenced the decision-making for the shootout. He also mentioned that the team had more than five players capable of taking effective penalties, including Rıdvan Yılmaz, who is normally reliable in such situations.

Dessers had contributed to Rangers’ League Cup victory the previous season, scoring a goal and providing an assist in the second round, demonstrating his value to the team in earlier stages of the competition.
