Six-time National FA/Federation/Aiteo Cup champions and perennial Enugu State Cup winners, Rangers International F.C. of Enugu, kicked off their quest for a seventh national trophy with a bright start, securing a 3-0 win over state league side Enugu Angels F.C. in a quarter-final encounter of the 2025 Enugu State President Federation Cup at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.
Goals from Godwin Obaje in the 10th and 25th minutes, as well as Frank Uwumiro at the half-hour mark, extinguished any fight-back from the state league side.
The state league side was the first to go on the attack as the referee signaled the start of the match, but their effort at goal was effectively denied by Kingdom Osayi, in goal for the ‘Flying Antelopes’. The action then shifted to the other end, where Chinemerem Ugwueze, Isaac Saviour, and Kazeem Ogunleye dominated the midfield.
After missing some clear chances, Godwin Obaje slotted home the opening goal after a fine cut-back from Frank Uwumiro at the 15-minute mark. On the 25th minute, the former league top scorer netted his brace from the penalty spot after Chinemerem Ugwueze was upended inside the box, and the referee quickly awarded a penalty.
At the half-hour mark, the lanky Frank Uwumiro scored after being set up by Kazeem Ogunleye’s sublime, defense-splitting pass. Efforts to add more goals before the end of the match were thwarted, largely due to the heroics of goalkeeper Ojobo Ifebuche and some stout defending, especially in the second half.
Rangers will face Great Achievers F.C. of Emene, who defeated Udi Stars 2-1 in the first quarter-final, on February 19, 2025.
