Rangers International FC wins 2023/2024 NPFL in style

Rangers International FC of Enugu on Sunday defeated Bendel Insurance FC of Benin 2-0 in Week 37 of the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) to emerge as worthy champions of the 2023/2024 Premier League season.


While many thought that the league crown would go down to the wire, Match Day 37 proved to be the decider as the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu witnessed Rangers winning the league on home soil.


The Flying Antelopes scored their first goal in the 32nd minute through a free kick by Kenechukwu Agu.


However, the first half ended 1-0 in favor of the Flying Antelopes.


The home team sealed victory in the 64th minute through a goal scored by Ikenna Nwobodo.


Before the match, the permutations had it that Rangers needed a straight win in Enugu, while they would wait to see the outcome of the match between Sporting Lagos FC, who are battling relegation, and other league contender Enyimba International FC.


In the event that Enyimba International and Remo Stars, the two chasing packs, failed to win, the Flying Antelopes did their job at home, beating the Benin Arsenals 2-0. Meanwhile, Remo Stars lost 2-1 to Sunshine Stars in Akure, and Enyimba lost 2-1 to Sporting Lagos in Lagos.


With the much-expected win and favorable results in Akure and Lagos, Rangers International FC became the clear winners of the 2023/2024 Nigerian top-flight with a game to spare. They have 67 points, meaning they now have four points above the second-placed team, which cannot catch up with them even if they lose the last away game against already relegated Gombe United FC on Match Day 38.


In his reaction, an elated Rangers’ coach, Fidelis Illechukwu, said: "We are the champions; we are the champions of the 2023/2024 NPFL. It’s not easy to be a champion."
