Rangers International FC Coach, Fidelis Ilechukwu, expressed his delight as the Flying Antelopes shot to the top of the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) after a spectacular 2-0 win over Heartland FC of Owerri in the Match Day 7 Oriental derby.
The Flying Antelopes claimed the bragging rights, with Kazeem Ogunleye scoring a stunning goal in the 3rd minute of the game, and Kenneth Igboke scoring from a rebound.
The Flying Antelopes initiated offensive play early on and were rewarded in the 3rd minute when Kazeem Ogunleye converted a free-kick to take the lead.
The Fidelis Ilechukwu-coached team then doubled the lead in the 53rd minute after Heartland FC's Chiaha made a brilliant save to stop Godwin Obaje's penalty, but Kenneth Igboke scored from the rebound.
Heartland FC had an open opportunity in the 48th minute to level the score with the hosts, but Chijioke Opara's attempt from close range hit the upright.
The game ended 2-0 in favor of Rangers International.
Rangers International FC Coach, Ilechukwu, praised his team's effort in achieving a clean sheet for the season against Heartland.
"It was a good game, and Heartland FC performed well. We also did our best because it was a derby. The most important thing is the clean sheet we obtained against our tough opponent. I emphasized the importance of a clean sheet to my players, and I thank God we achieved it.
"My former team, Heartland FC, owes me a salary of N12 million but denies it. I am happy that we are leading the league, and that is the most important thing. Life is about working and obtaining results as well."
One of the scorers, Ogunleye, said he was delighted to have scored his first free-kick in the current campaign.
