Rangers manager Philippe Clement addressed the media on Wednesday ahead of the team’s Europa League match against Lyon at Ibrox Stadium. One of the key topics discussed was the effective partnership between defenders Robin Pröpper and John Souttar, which has shown impressive results in recent games. Their collaboration has been crucial in helping Rangers secure four consecutive clean sheets.
Clement expressed his desire to maintain this defensive duo, emphasizing the importance of developing a strong understanding between the two center-backs. With Pröpper and Souttar having played the full 90 minutes in each of Rangers' last four matches across all competitions, their performance has been instrumental in bolstering the team’s defensive capabilities.
While Souttar has been with Rangers since January 2022, having joined from Heart of Midlothian, Pröpper only arrived at Ibrox two months ago from Twente. Their strong form has unfortunately limited playing time for Nigeria international Leon Balogun, who last featured in the Old Firm match on September 1. Despite being included in the matchday squad for the last four games, Balogun has not seen any action, remaining a non-playing substitute.
Clement acknowledged the challenges Balogun faces in securing a starting spot but noted the defender's dedication and quality in training. He praised Balogun's professionalism, stating, “We also have Leon Balogun still there who knows his role in the squad. He has been excellent in training and has shown quality.”
The manager also mentioned the versatility of other players in the squad, such as Nana Neraysho Kasanwirjo and Dujon Sterling, who can also fill in at center-back. He highlighted the importance of building connections among the team, particularly with new players like Pröpper and Souttar, as they work to develop effective partnerships on the field.
Clement pointed out that half of the defense is comprised of new players, which requires finding the right balance to improve the team’s performance continually. “You can add Jefte also in that way. Our number six is new, so you need to find the balance which is getting better and better,” he explained.
As the team prepared for their upcoming match against Twente, Balogun and his international teammate Cyriel Dessers were seen training with the squad during their final session on Wednesday. Their involvement in training suggests that both players may be contenders for inclusion in the matchday squad.
