Rangers coach advises Dessers to be more clinical after miss

Posted : 02 September 2024

After Rangers' heavy defeat to Celtic in their Scottish Premiership clash at Celtic Park on Sunday, manager Philippe Clement addressed the media. One key issue he highlighted was the early missed opportunities by Rangers when the score was still 0-0.

Celtic secured their victory thanks to goals from Daizen Maeda, Kyogo Furuhashi, and Callum McGregor, sealing a convincing win for Brendan Rodgers' team.

Cyriel Dessers, who has been one of Rangers' standout forwards this season, had an unusually poor performance against Celtic. Less than eight minutes into the match, Dessers had a chance to put Rangers ahead, but his close-range shot was poorly executed and easily saved by goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, although the linesman’s flag was raised soon after.

In the tenth minute, Rabbi Matondo also missed a significant opportunity by heading wide after a well-placed cross from James Tavernier. These missed chances proved to be costly as Celtic took the lead through Daizen Maeda in the 17th minute, with Kyogo Furuhashi doubling the lead by the 40th minute, essentially putting the game beyond Rangers' reach.

In his post-match comments, Clement expressed his disappointment with the team’s failure to capitalize on early scoring chances and specifically mentioned Dessers. "We started the game really well, had the best of the ball in the first ten minutes, and created two good opportunities, with Cyriel’s chance in front of goal and Rabbi’s header," Clement noted.

Clement emphasized the need for clinical finishing in such crucial matches, explaining that taking the lead would have changed the game’s momentum and significantly benefited his team.

After the break, Dessers had another opportunity to score his sixth goal of the season when Ross McCausland won possession, but his shot was once again directed straight at Celtic’s goalkeeper.
