Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca confirmed on Wednesday that England internationals Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell are currently training separately from the first team. This development follows speculation in British media about potential moves for the two players. Sterling and Chilwell, who both missed Chelsea's 2-0 Premier League defeat to Manchester City on Sunday, may face challenges in securing regular playing time if they stay with the club, according to Maresca.
Maresca noted that with a large squad at his disposal, providing ample playing time for every player is impractical. He suggested that if Sterling and Chilwell are seeking more game time, it might be in their best interest to consider leaving the club. Maresca specifically mentioned that Sterling's playing style does not align with his preferred type of winger, despite acknowledging Sterling's quality as a player.
The manager also addressed his previous conversations with Sterling and Chilwell, indicating that both players were informed about their likely limited minutes. Maresca emphasized that his approach is meant to be honest rather than harsh, and he believes that seeking a move could offer them better opportunities for regular play elsewhere.
In addition to the situation with Sterling and Chilwell, Maresca announced that captain Reece James will be unavailable for Chelsea’s Europa Conference League playoff match against Swiss side Servette due to a hamstring injury. He also reiterated the team's intention to win every game, including the upcoming fixture, despite acknowledging the challenge posed by their recent match against Manchester City.
