Dimitri de Condé, the head of football at KRC Genk, recently disclosed that he made an effort to re-sign Paul Onuachu this summer. Despite the club's interest in bringing him back, the tall striker declined the opportunity to return to his former team.
Onuachu had been a standout player for Genk before his departure to Southampton, where he made a significant impact with 85 goals and 10 assists in 134 appearances across all competitions. His time at Genk was marked by impressive achievements, including winning one trophy and earning the Belgian Golden Shoe, Belgian Professional Footballer of the Year, and Ebony Shoe awards.
However, the 30-year-old has struggled to maintain the same level of success since leaving Genk. His stint at Southampton was less fruitful, although he performed well during a loan spell at Trabzonspor last season.
De Condé revealed that Genk had reached out to Onuachu about a possible return, but the striker chose to decline the offer. He also addressed rumors regarding the club's interest in re-signing another former player, Mike Trésor, clarifying that the focus had been on Onuachu.
In a statement relayed by Voetbal Primeur via Sport Witness, de Condé shared, "Not Trésor, I have had contact with Paul several times. Those were good conversations, but I also had them with him last year. Paul expressed that 'Genk is home for me, and it will remain that way. One day I will come home. But at the moment, I want to continue tasting abroad.' Ultimately, we could not reach an agreement on a transfer."
Currently, Onuachu is being monitored by Trabzonspor, and he is reportedly interested in a move to the Turkish club, given his successful stint there last season. However, negotiations are complicated by differences in valuation.
Additionally, Süper Lig newcomers Göztepe have also shown interest in the imposing forward, adding to the speculation about his next destination.
