Pundit urges Ndidi to stay at Leicester

Posted : 24 October 2023
Football writer for Football League World, Aaron Tebbutt, has encouraged Nigerian international Wilfred Ndidi to resist the temptation of a move to European powerhouse Barcelona and instead focus on the prospect of Leicester City's imminent return to the English Premier League.

Leicester City currently leads the standings and appears well-positioned to secure a prompt return to the Premier League, having faced relegation last season. They have built an impressive eleven-point gap ahead of third-placed Leeds United after twelve matches this season.

Ndidi, who has been deployed in a more advanced midfield role, has been one of Leicester's standout performers, contributing to seven goals in fifteen appearances across all competitions. Nevertheless, his future at the King Power Stadium remains uncertain as his contract expires at the conclusion of the 2023-2024 season.

Several top European clubs, including Barcelona and Juventus, are reportedly keeping a close watch on Ndidi's situation. Since joining Leicester City from Racing Genk in January 2017, Ndidi has made 252 appearances for the club.

Tebbutt advises the Nigerian midfielder to reconsider renewing his contract with Leicester City, even though the allure of a transfer to Barcelona may be tempting.

"If Ndidi delivers a strong campaign, Leicester City will have no choice but to offer him a new contract before he becomes a free agent," Tebbutt wrote on Football League World.

"If this scenario unfolds, the 26-year-old should seriously consider extending his stay with Leicester, as the club appears increasingly likely to secure a return to the Premier League next season.

"Declining an offer from a club as historically prestigious as Barcelona would indeed be a difficult decision. However, Ndidi should prioritize enjoying a promotion campaign with Leicester to the Premier League and continue his career in the top-flight at the King Power Stadium."

Ndidi and his Leicester City teammates are set to face Sunderland at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday under the floodlights.
