PSG's Luis Enrique Confident in Current Squad Ahead of Transfer Deadline

Posted : 22 August 2024

Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique expressed his satisfaction with the current squad on Thursday, downplaying the likelihood of additional signings before the transfer window closes next week. Despite the significant investment of around 175 million euros ($195 million) on four new players this summer, PSG has yet to secure a new striker to replace Kylian Mbappe.

Mbappe, the club's all-time leading scorer, left for Real Madrid after his contract expired, leaving a notable gap in the squad. The situation was further complicated when Portuguese forward Goncalo Ramos suffered an ankle injury just 15 minutes into PSG's 4-1 win against Le Havre in Ligue 1. Ramos has since undergone surgery and is expected to be sidelined for three months.

Luis Enrique acknowledged Ramos's injury as a setback but emphasized his confidence in the team's current roster. Speaking ahead of PSG's first home game of the season against Montpellier, he noted that while the club's management is always open to strengthening the squad, finding the right players at the right price is challenging. He praised the efforts of President Nasser al-Khelaifi and Sporting Director Luis Campos in assembling a strong team.

PSG's recent signings include 19-year-old Rennes winger Desire Doue for a reported 50 million euros and Portugal midfielder Joao Neves from Benfica, potentially costing up to 69.9 million euros. Additionally, the club has added Ecuadorian defender Willian Pacho from Eintracht Frankfurt and Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov from Krasnodar. With the transfer deadline looming on August 30, talk of acquiring Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has cooled, leaving Randal Kolo Muani and potentially Marco Asensio as the primary options to lead the attack.
