PSG Reclaim Ligue 1 Top Spot with 4-2 Win Over Strasbourg

Posted : 20 October 2024

Paris Saint-Germain reclaimed the top spot in Ligue 1 on Saturday with a 4-2 victory over Strasbourg, moving ahead of Monaco on goal difference. The win came after Monaco’s goalless draw with Lille on Friday, giving PSG the chance to capitalize despite coach Luis Enrique rotating his squad ahead of their upcoming Champions League match. Senny Mayulu, the 18-year-old PSG forward, scored his first Ligue 1 goal to open the scoring, with Marco Asensio, Bradley Barcola, and Lee Kang-in also contributing in the rain-soaked encounter at Parc des Princes.

Mayulu’s opening goal in the 18th minute came after linking up with Barcola, and he later missed an opportunity to double his tally before halftime. Asensio made it 2-0 early in the second half by finishing off a rebound from Desire Doue’s shot. Strasbourg's Sekou Mara cut the deficit with his first goal for the club, but PSG maintained control, adding a third through Barcola, who netted his seventh of the season.

Despite a disallowed PSG goal for offside, South Korean international Lee Kang-in capped the victory with a late strike, converting a pass from Joao Neves to seal the fourth goal. Strasbourg managed to score a late consolation through Pape Diong, but it was not enough to threaten PSG’s dominance, as the Alsace side’s winless record away to PSG extended to 34 matches.

In other Ligue 1 action, Brest and Rennes played out a 1-1 draw in a Brittany derby, while Lens continued their unbeaten run with a 2-0 victory over Saint-Etienne. PSG’s latest win positions them well ahead of their crucial European tie against PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday.
