Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has been charged with complicity in abuse of power, related to a shareholder voting dispute at the Lagardère Group. The charges, filed on February 5, stem from an alleged manipulation of the voting process in a 2018 power struggle involving a Qatari investment fund and the French media conglomerate.
Al-Khelaifi is accused of being involved in influencing the voting at Lagardère's board, allegedly undermining shareholder independence. However, a source close to him strongly denied the charges, asserting that the case was baseless and that he was being unfairly targeted due to his high profile.
The case revolves around a period of intense corporate infighting at Lagardère, as two major factions clashed over control of the company. One side was backed by Vincent Bolloré’s Amber Capital fund, and the other by Bernard Arnault’s LVMH, with Al-Khelaifi’s Qatar Holding LLC, a subsidiary of Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund, playing a significant role.
Initially, the Qatari-backed holding supported Amber Capital’s resolutions in April 2018, but five days later, the vote shifted in favor of Arnaud Lagardère’s proposals. This reversal has become a focal point in the ongoing legal battle.
Al-Khelaifi has a history of legal challenges but has consistently denied any wrongdoing. His legal troubles also include accusations related to Qatar's bids for the 2017 and 2019 World Athletics Championships, although those charges were dropped in February 2023.
Parisian magistrates are further investigating him over claims of involvement in the alleged kidnapping of Franco-Algerian lobbyist Tayeb Benabderrahmane, but Al-Khelaifi has denied these allegations and filed his own legal complaints in response.
The broader context of this case involves Arnaud Lagardère’s company being accused of financial misconduct, including misappropriating over 125 million euros for personal expenses. The ongoing scrutiny of Al-Khelaifi's role highlights a complex web of corporate power struggles, with his future in the French and global sports landscape potentially affected by these legal proceedings.
