In the midst of booing aimed at him from certain Paris Saint-Germain supporters, Lionel Messi's farewell match for the club ended in a shocking 3-2 home loss to Clermont Foot.
Before the game began, PSG announced that Messi will not renew his two-season contract with the team past this season, making this his goodbye to the fans.
When the speaker at Parc des Princes read Messi's name before Saturday's game, several PSG supporters booed him. A little while later, Messi entered the field grinning as he held his three kids' hands for the team photo and kissed them on the foreheads.
"I would like to thank the club, the city of Paris and its people for these two years. I wish you all the best for the future," Messi told the club website.
Messi scored 32 goals and provided 35 assists in all competitions during his two seasons with PSG, helping his team to two French league championships and the French Champions Trophy.
The Paris club won Ligue 1 last weekend, but the season was a letdown after a second straight round of 16 Champions League loss, and the club's supporters have been vocal about their unhappiness recently.
