SuperSport United central defender Ime Okon, who is eligible for Nigeria through his father and born in South Africa, is currently undergoing trials at the Danish Superliga club FC Midtjylland. Despite being named in South Africa's 50-man provisional squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Okon will not be part of the final squad headed to Ivory Coast, as coach Hugo Broos opted for more experienced defenders.
Reports from Tipsbladet suggest that Okon has arrived at FC Midtjylland for trials with the possibility of a potential transfer. With approximately a year and a half remaining on his contract with SuperSport United, Okon's trial period could lead to a permanent move if he impresses the coaching staff at FC Midtjylland. If successful, the Danish club would need to pay a transfer fee for his services.
In the event of a transfer, Okon would join FC Midtjylland's defensive ranks, competing with players such as Sverrir Ingi Ingason, Mads Bech Sørensen, Juninho, Han-beom Lee, and Henrik Dalsgaard at the center of defense.
It's worth noting that three players named in Nigeria's provisional AFCON squad – Paul Onuachu, Raphael Onyedika, and Frank Onyeka – have roots in the FC Midtjylland academy, highlighting the club's connection to Nigerian talent.
