Premier League Punishes Everton for Violating the Financial Fair Play Rules
Posted : 11 April 2023
Without providing any additional information, the Premier League announced on Friday that Everton has been referred to a separate tribunal for allegedly breaking the Financial Fair Play rules last season.
In a statement, Everton expressed disappointment with the choice.
"The club strongly contests the allegation of non-compliance and together with its independent team of experts is entirely confident that it remains compliant with all financial rules and regulations," it said.
"Everton is prepared to robustly defend its position to the commission.
"The club has, over several years, provided information to the Premier League in an open and transparent manner and has consciously chosen to act with the utmost good faith at all times."
Everton finished 16th last season, just managing to stay in the league. They are currently 15th in the table, barely three points above the bottom team Southampton, and are once again struggling to stay in the division.
Teams are allowed to lose a maximum of £105 million ($128.28 million) over the course of three seasons in the Premier League, though there were exceptional exceptions provided during the COVID-19 epidemic.
In the previous three seasons, Everton has suffered a combined loss of around £372 million.
The club, which is majority controlled by Farhad Moshiri, has estimated that the epidemic cost at least £170 million. The Premier League has punished Everton for violating the Financial Fair Play rules.
