Premier League clubs set record spending on player acquisitions

Posted : 26 August 2023
Premier League clubs have set a new spending record in the summer transfer window, reaching a staggering £1.95 billion ($2.45 billion) on player acquisitions, with projections indicating that the total might surpass £2 billion, according to a report by Deloitte released on Friday.

The ongoing transfer window, which commenced on June 14, has already outpaced the previous year's record of £1.92 billion, even with a week remaining until the September 1 deadline, as stated by Deloitte's Sports Business Group.

This year's transfer window saw two major transfers exceeding £100 million each, with Chelsea securing midfielder Moisés Caicedo and Arsenal acquiring midfielder Declan Rice, a notable contrast to the absence of such high-value transfers in the prior summer.

Chelsea, under the ownership of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital since May 2022, has been particularly active in the market, signing nine players and surpassing $1 billion in transfer fees.

Defending champions Manchester City also made significant acquisitions, including winger Jérémy Doku for a reported £55 million, defender Josko Gvardiol for €90 million ($97 million), and midfielder Mateo Kovacic for £25 million.

Manchester United invested £72 million in striker Rasmus Højlund, while last season's runners-up, Arsenal, spent £65 million on forward Kai Havertz.

Newcastle United, having finished fourth in the previous season, made notable signings, including midfielder Sandro Tonali for £55 million and winger Harvey Barnes for £38 million.
