Postecoglou Voices Concern Over Fragile Foundations as Spurs Fall to City

Posted : 15 May 2024

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou expressed concern over the fragility of the foundations he's laid at the club following their 2-0 defeat to Manchester City, which could potentially thwart Arsenal's Premier League title hopes. The loss effectively ended Spurs' chances of securing Champions League football, with Erling Haaland's brace propelling City to the top of the table, leaving Arsenal trailing by two points ahead of the final fixtures on Sunday.

Initially dismissing the notion that Spurs fans would revel in their own team's defeat to thwart Arsenal's title aspirations, Postecoglou admitted to misreading the atmosphere after the subdued response to Tuesday's match, where chants mocking Arsenal were evident in the latter stages. Reflecting on the situation, the Australian acknowledged the fragility of the club's foundations, signaling a need for reassessment.

Pressed on whether his frustration was directed at the fans or internal factors, Postecoglou emphasized his indifference, indicating that the recent events provided valuable insights into what it takes to foster a winning team. Despite Tottenham's penchant for late goals this season, notably seen in their 3-3 draw with City earlier in the campaign, there was a noticeable absence of crowd encouragement during crucial moments of the match.

Postecoglou acknowledged the impact of crowd support on team performance but remained focused on his task of building a winning squad, irrespective of external priorities. With Tottenham still vying for fifth place and Europa League qualification, they require just a point in their upcoming fixture against relegated Sheffield United to secure their spot for the next season.
