Postecoglou Urges Tottenham to Overcome "Spursy" Reputation with Relentless Play

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has called on his team to shake off their reputation for inconsistency by demonstrating relentless determination in their pursuit of success. The term "Spursy," often used by fans to describe the team's tendency to falter in key moments, has long frustrated supporters. Tottenham has struggled to break this pattern, missing out on Champions League qualification last season and showing inconsistency at the start of the current campaign.

 

Their recent 3-2 loss to Brighton, where they squandered a 2-0 lead, marked the 10th time in Premier League history that Tottenham has lost after leading by two or more goals. This issue of letting commanding leads slip has haunted the club, with Saturday's derby against West Ham recalling a similar collapse from a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3 in 2020. Postecoglou, however, downplayed the historical criticism, pointing out that such incidents have not been common during his tenure and emphasizing that success is the only way to alter the team's image.

 

The Australian coach acknowledged that the only way to change the team's perception is by proving their ability to be relentless and successful, not through complaints about labels like "Spursy." He believes that the team must consistently demonstrate their commitment and resolve on the pitch to alter these perceptions. Postecoglou remains confident that his squad can grow beyond this issue if they stick to their football principles and maintain a focused approach throughout matches.

 

Following the international break, Postecoglou admitted to feeling frustrated with the team's second-half performance against Brighton, describing it as passive and lacking conviction. He stressed that Tottenham needs to learn from this and ensure they adhere to their core principles, regardless of how a game unfolds. Postecoglou's focus is now on regrouping and ensuring his players approach each match with courage and consistency.
