Postecoglou Backs Son to Shine Despite Goal Drought

Posted : 26 February 2025

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has reaffirmed his confidence in captain Son Heung-min, stating that the South Korean is back to his best despite a goal drought. Son, who faced rare criticism earlier this season after scoring only four times before December, has since played a crucial role for Spurs.

While he has not found the net in his last seven appearances, Tottenham triggered a one-year contract extension in January, keeping him at the club until 2026. His influence remains strong, as he provided two assists in the recent victory over Ipswich, taking his tally to 10 goals and double-digit assists this season.

Postecoglou dismissed any concerns about Son’s form ahead of Tottenham’s crucial clash against Manchester City, emphasizing the winger’s elite dribbling and finishing abilities. The Australian coach noted that Son has benefitted from extended recovery time between matches, allowing him to maintain high energy levels.

He praised Son’s professionalism and conditioning, adding that players of his caliber often defy expectations regarding longevity. Postecoglou believes Son’s impact on the pitch remains as vital as ever, highlighting his consistent ability to perform at the highest level.

With Tottenham’s only remaining trophy opportunity in the Europa League, Postecoglou is counting on Son to lead the charge, especially with key forwards Dominic Solanke and Richarlison unavailable.

He pointed out that Son’s statistical contributions still place him among the Premier League’s best wingers, ranking in the top tier for output over the past decade. Despite a challenging season for Spurs, Postecoglou insists there is no indication that Son is slowing down, reinforcing his importance to the team's success.
