Portugal's historic 9-0 Victory over Luxembourg headlines Euro 2024 qualifiers

Posted : 12 September 2023
In a historic and dominant performance, Portugal secured a resounding 9-0 victory over Luxembourg in their Euro 2024 qualifying match, even without Cristiano Ronaldo in the lineup. Gonzalo Inácio, Gonzalo Ramos, Diogo Jota, Joao Felix, Ricardo Horta, and Bruno Fernandes (who also provided three assists) all joined the scoring frenzy. This victory marked Portugal's biggest win in their history, showcasing their dominance.

Portugal has maintained their supremacy over Luxembourg, with this being their 16th consecutive victory against them, boasting a remarkable goal difference of 61-2. Even without Ronaldo, the historic display continued.

The scoring spree began early, with Gonzalo Inácio heading home a superb cross from Bruno Fernandes in the 12th minute to make it 1-0. Just six minutes later, Gonzalo Ramos extended the lead to 2-0 after a well-placed shot from Bruno Fernandes' interception in the opponent's midfield.

Portugal continued to dominate as Leao's impressive run on the wing led to another assist for Ramos, completing his brace in the 34th minute, making it 3-0.

In the 77th minute, Diogo Jota added another goal to Portugal's tally, making it 7-0. Remarkably, this historic performance occurred without Cristiano Ronaldo on the pitch.

Bruno Fernandes, who had already provided three assists, scored Portugal's eighth goal in the 83rd minute, equaling their largest-ever victory margin.

In the 88th minute, Joao Felix came off the bench to cap off the incredible 9-0 win, solidifying Portugal's historic achievement.

In another Euro 2024 qualifying match, Slovakia secured an impressive 3-0 victory over Liechtenstein with goals from David Hachko, Ondrej Duda, and Robert Mack. This victory allowed Slovakia to maintain their second-place position in Group D, with 13 points, just five points behind leaders Portugal.

Earlier in the day, Croatia, the third-place finisher in the World Cup, recorded their third victory in Group D with a 1-0 win over their opponents. Andrej Kramaric netted the only goal in the 15th minute, securing the win for Croatia, who temporarily climbed to the top of the group standings.
