Portugal secured an impressive victory against Vietnam, setting up a last-16 showdown with reigning champions, the United States, in the Women's World Cup. It was a historic win for Portugal, as they scored their first-ever World Cup goals through Telma Encarnacao and Kika Nazareth.
To progress to the knockout stages, Portugal will need to pull off a major upset and defeat the four-time winners, the USA. Unfortunately, Vietnam's World Cup journey comes to an end after this defeat at Waikato Stadium in Hamilton, New Zealand.
Portugal's final Group E match will be against the United States, scheduled for Tuesday at 08:00 BST. Meanwhile, Vietnam will aim to secure their first World Cup point and goal in their match against the Netherlands, also at the same time.
Portugal's manager, Francisco Neto, acknowledged that facing the United States will be a completely different challenge, despite their victory against Vietnam. He also mentioned that there are areas where his team can improve.
In an earlier match on the same day, the USA played to a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands in Wellington.
