Portugal's Win Over Turkey Marred by Multiple Pitch Invasions for Ronaldo Selfies

Posted : 23 June 2024

Portugal's Euro 2024 Group F victory over Turkey in Dortmund on Saturday was disrupted four times by fans running onto the pitch to take selfies with Cristiano Ronaldo. After the match, two additional supporters managed to do the same. Portugal coach Roberto Martinez expressed serious concern about these incidents, emphasizing that such behavior should not be allowed and urging fans to refrain from similar actions.

Martinez stated, "It is a concern, but today we were lucky as the intentions of the fans were good. The fans recognize big stars and icons, but there is a very difficult situation if their intentions are wrong, and players are exposed." He stressed that despite the presence of security, such breaches should not occur and warned that future incidents could be more dangerous if not addressed.

During the 70th minute, Ronaldo, now playing for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, posed for a photo with a young boy who had evaded security. The child, around 10 years old, received a hug from Ronaldo before eventually being caught by security. The crowd cheered as the boy was led away. Shortly after, a teenage boy attempted a similar stunt, but Ronaldo waved him off before security intervened. German referee Felix Zwayer had to pause the game on both occasions to remove the intruders.

Two adult males also ran onto the pitch during stoppage time, heading toward Ronaldo with their phones before being stopped by security. After the final whistle, two more supporters managed to reach the pitch without interrupting the game. These incidents have prompted an automatic disciplinary investigation by UEFA concerning stadium security, which could affect future matches scheduled to be held at the venue.
