FC Porto, a dominant force in Portugal's Primeira Liga, has recently reached a finalized agreement with Benfica to secure the services of the highly talented Nigerian defender, Bruno Onyemaechi.
The reliable Portuguese publication CM Jornal broke the news, revealing that Porto has already begun the process by paying a portion of the transfer fee to Onyemaechi's current club, Boavista.
Onyemaechi, who showcased his remarkable versatility and skill as a full-back during his time at Boavista, is now poised to join FC Porto for the upcoming five seasons, bringing his immense talent to the club.
However, the official announcement of the transfer is being delayed as Porto seeks to resolve the situations involving their current wing-backs, Zaidu Sanusi and Brazil's Wendell.
According to the terms of the agreement, at least one of them must depart before Onyemaechi's arrival can be officially confirmed.
Boavista's president, Vítor Murta, maintains that they have not received any offers for the 24-year-old Nigerian defender.
Nonetheless, reports indicate that Porto has already submitted a satisfactory bid, meeting the approval of coach Sérgio Conceição, thereby securing Onyemaechi's services.
Interestingly, the payment made by Porto to Boavista for Onyemaechi's transfer may serve to offset a previous debt owed by Boavista to Porto.
This debt stems from last summer when Nigerian defender Chidozie Awaziem was loaned to Boavista, subsequently making his move permanent to Besa.
Boavista is obligated to pay Porto five million, representing the transfer fee for the center-back, but it appears that the payment has yet to be made.
Thus, acquiring Onyemaechi at a minimal or even zero cost to Porto would resolve this outstanding debt from a blue-and-white perspective.
However, Boavista, facing pressing financial needs, is unsatisfied with this arrangement and is pushing for a higher transfer fee.
Consequently, the announcement of the deal is currently being held back by two major obstacles: resolving the Zaidu/Wendell situation and reaching a consensus on the transfer value.
As a result, the progress of the transfer process has been temporarily halted due to these factors.
Despite interest from clubs in Spain and France, Onyemaechi's priority remains to continue his football journey in Portugal.
The Nigerian defender had a standout campaign with Boavista last season, featuring in 33 matches and scoring two goals, solidifying his reputation as a rising star in Portuguese football.
