Poland's Euro 2024 Hopes Rest on Lewandowski's Fitness Ahead of Austria Clash

Posted : 19 June 2024

Poland are pinning their hopes on star striker Robert Lewandowski's fitness ahead of their crucial Euro 2024 Group D encounter against Austria, following a disappointing 2-1 loss to the Netherlands in their tournament opener. Lewandowski, who sustained a thigh injury in a warm-up match against Turkey, was sidelined for the Dutch game despite being named on the bench by coach Michal Probierz, who opted not to risk his star player.

Probierz expressed optimism about Lewandowski's availability for the Austria match, highlighting his pivotal role in the team. Despite the defeat to the Netherlands, Probierz emphasized the positives, pointing out Poland's strong performance and their ability to compete against top-tier teams, instilling confidence in his squad to bounce back.

Austria, meanwhile, also suffered a narrow defeat in their opening game against France, courtesy of an own goal by Max Wober. With both teams desperate for points to keep their knockout stage hopes alive, Friday's clash in Berlin has taken on added significance. For Poland, Adam Buksa stepped up in Lewandowski's absence against the Dutch, scoring a surprise opener before eventual defeat.

Austria's coach Ralf Rangnick acknowledged the importance of the upcoming match against Poland, labeling it as decisive for their tournament aspirations. Rangnick dismissed concerns about his team's disciplinary issues from the previous game, stressing that their focus is solely on securing a crucial victory. With France and the Netherlands looming in their final group matches, both Poland and Austria recognize the pivotal nature of Friday's encounter as they aim to advance in Euro 2024.
