Pochettino's Remarkable Victory, Three Potential Super Eagles Benched
Posted : 08 October 2023
Chelsea extended their winning streak to three consecutive victories across all competitions by defeating Luca Koleosho's Burnley 4-1 at Turf Moor on Saturday afternoon.
In terms of goal count, this victory marks Mauricio Pochettino's most significant win since taking the helm as Chelsea's manager for the 2023-2024 campaign.
With Pochettino guiding the team from the sidelines, the Blues also secured a resounding three-goal victory (3-0) against another Premier League newcomer, Luton Town, on August 25.
Pochettino made a solitary change to the starting lineup, a move that resulted in three Super Eagles-eligible players, Lesley Ugochukwu, Carney Chukwuemeka, and Noni Madueke, being named on the substitutes' bench.
Despite Chelsea dominating the game and cruising to victory, Pochettino chose not to grant playing time to the aforementioned Nigerian-descent players.
Wilson Odobert became the youngest player to score a Premier League goal for Burnley when he broke the deadlock in the 15th minute. However, the visitors equalized through an unfortunate own goal from Ameen Al-Dakhil three minutes before halftime.
In the second half, Chelsea dominated, with goals from Cole Palmer, Raheem Sterling, and Nicolas Jackson securing a comfortable win for the Blues.
France U21 coach Thierry Henry has selected Ugochukwu for his squad in the European Championship qualifiers against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Cyprus. Madueke is also set to report for international duty early next week, having been named in the England U21 squad.
Heading into the international break, Chelsea currently hold the 11th position in the provisional Premier League table, having secured eleven points from eight games.
