Mauricio Pochettino has parted ways with Chelsea by mutual consent, the Premier League club announced on Tuesday. This decision concludes Pochettino's tenure after just one season, despite a notable late-season improvement in the team’s performance.
Pochettino was appointed ahead of the 2023-24 season, replacing interim manager Frank Lampard. New owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital brought him in to rejuvenate the squad following a disappointing 12th-place finish in the previous campaign. Although Pochettino signed a two-year contract with an option for an additional year, he departs after a challenging season that ended with a sixth-place finish and European qualification.
Sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley expressed their gratitude for Pochettino's contributions, acknowledging his efforts in stabilizing the team. They conveyed their best wishes for his future coaching endeavors, emphasizing that he would always be welcome at Stamford Bridge.
Pochettino's appointment followed Chelsea's significant investment in the transfer market, with the club spending £400 million on new signings last summer. Despite early struggles, Pochettino managed to turn the season around as the team found form, culminating in a strong finish.
Although Chelsea secured a spot in the Conference League, they could potentially play in the Europa League if Manchester City wins the FA Cup final. Speculation about Pochettino's departure had been circulating, but he had remained silent on the matter until the official announcement.
