Plymouth Argyle's first match after Wayne Rooney's departure as manager ended in a 2-2 draw against Bristol City on Wednesday. The match saw a dramatic conclusion with Julio Pleguezuelo scoring a stoppage-time equalizer. The Spanish defender’s acrobatic finish came after Adam Randell's free-kick found Zak Vyner, allowing Pleguezuelo to convert from close range.
Bristol City took the lead twice through Anis Mehmeti and Jason Knight, but Argyle fought back. Rami Al Hajj scored his first goal for Plymouth to equalize, and then Pleguezuelo’s late strike secured a point for the hosts. First-team coach Kevin Nancekivell, who replaced Rooney after his resignation on New Year’s Eve, guided the team through the match at a rainy Home Park.
Despite the draw, Plymouth remained at the bottom of the Championship standings, though they are now three points from safety. The club, which has struggled since Rooney's appointment in May, has only won four matches under his leadership. With several matches still to be played on New Year’s Day, Plymouth will look to climb out of the relegation zone.
Elsewhere in the Championship, Queens Park Rangers secured a 3-1 victory over Watford, with Michael Frey marking his return from injury with an early goal. Jimmy Dunne's header doubled QPR’s lead before Kwado Baah pulled one back for Watford. However, QPR restored their two-goal advantage when Sam Field scored from a Paul Smyth cross, maintaining a strong run that has lifted them clear of relegation danger.
