Franky Van der Elst believes Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyedika should have been shown a red card during Club Brugge's 3-0 victory over Royal Antwerp in the Jupiler Pro League Championship playoffs on Sunday.
Onyedika, aged 22, netted the opening goal in the 44th minute, slotting home the rebound for his third goal of the playoffs, making him the top scorer with three goals.
His goal pushed him ahead of Genk's Tolu Arokodare and Togo's Kévin Denkey of Cercle Brugge, who both have two goals each in the playoffs.
Despite Onyedika's contribution, goals from Michal Skoras and Philip Zinckernagel in the second half secured the victory for Club Brugge, the 18-time Belgian champions.
A point of contention arose from Onyedika's challenge on Royal Antwerp midfielder Jurgen Ekkelenkamp, resulting in a yellow card for Ekkelenkamp.
During commentary on Eleven Sports/DAZN, relayed by voetbalnieuws, Van der Elst criticized the referee's decision, suggesting that the VAR should have intervened due to the severity of the tackle.
Van der Elst argued, "The VAR has to look at this. Onyedika came in very strongly and was too late anyway, the fact that he slips away does play to his advantage."
As a consequence of the yellow card, Onyedika will be suspended for Club Brugge's next match against Union Saint-Gilloise at the Stade Joseph, but he will be eligible to play in their UEFA Europa Conference League fixture against William Troost-Ekong's PAOK on Thursday.
