Plateau Utd FC squeeze past ultra-defensive Sunshine Stars
Posted : 23 October 2023
The Peace Boys returned home for Match Day 4 of the 2023/2024 season with a well-deserved victory over the solid defending Sunshine Stars of Akure, following their disappointing outcome in Benin on Match Day 3.
Lined up against Sunshine Stars of Akure, a team that dropped two points at home to Heartland FC of Owerri, and with Edith Agoye's ultra-defensive philosophy in play, The Peace Boys faced a challenging task.
Despite several returns to the first team, former Gombe United full-back Umar Ahmed Farouk made his debut appearance for The Peace Boys. His lively, captivating, creative, and menacing performance captured the admiration of an expectant fan base. Their appreciation of his abilities and penetrative capabilities saw him deliver a fine performance on his debut, even after being substituted.
Despite limited space in both halves of the game, The Peace Boys created numerous impressive chances but struggled to convert them into goals, despite their sustained pressure that often pinned their opponents on the back foot.
Thirty minutes into the match, Uche Onwuasoanya was fouled just over 25 yards from the opposition goal. Albert Hilary unleashed a thunderous shot from Sunday Anthony's back-heel pass, igniting massive celebrations and putting The Peace Boys ahead.
Sunshine Stars had opportunities to get back into the game, but their efforts didn't unsettle Plateau United to a significant extent. Both Edith Agoye, the Technical Adviser of Sunshine Stars, and Mbwas Mangut, the counterpart at Plateau United, acknowledged the quality displayed by both teams.
With six home wins, three draws, and no away victories, the bigger picture of Match Day 4 comes into focus. Only Akwa United and Heartland Football Clubs of Owerri and Uyo have yet to secure a win after four rounds of games.
Plateau United heads northeast for a match against Gombe United at the Pantami Stadium, while Kano Pillars head east for a matchup against Enugu Rangers on Match Day 5.
With only four games decided so far, the resurgence of fans attending matches en masse is likely linked to the reorganized security measures and reduced gate fees. This promises to bring fans back to the stadiums once again.
