2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 20: Plateau United FC scores two late goals to condemn Rivers United FC to second defeat

Posted : 28 January 2025

The Peace Boys of Jos returned to the dugout on Match Day 20 on Monday after holding the Pride of Rivers to a 1-1 draw in Port Harcourt, with hopes of consolidating their position in Jos.

Rivers United looked poised to recoup their lost points in Jos in a crucial encounter that held significant meaning for both teams at opposite ends of the table.

Ubong Friday's dangerous attempt early in the match, Samuel Kalu's dazzling display, and David Onovo's close shave with a headed attempt defined key moments before Wale Doyeni's opening goal after 21 minutes.

A set-piece delivery into Rivers United's area, following Sam Pam Junior's header, unsettled Rivers United's Osagie Onisodumeya. His sublime interventions ensured the score stayed low but had little to do with Olawale Doyeni's ensuing header that put the Peace Boys one goal ahead after 21 minutes.

The goal was followed by end-to-end action, with Taofeek Otaniyi connecting with Ubong Friday's supply to hit the Peace Boys' woodwork.

Just when it seemed the Peace Boys had secured all three points on Match Day, some fine combinations ending in Ndifreke Effiong's powerful header in the 87th minute threatened to break hearts.

However, it was not to be for the Pride of Rivers, as Plateau United's new signing, Emmanuel Ihezuo, smashed in a sweet combination to grab the headlines and send the fans into a frenzy.

Rivers United's Chief Coach, Evans Ogenyi, praised the eventual winners but remained committed to Rivers United's desire to win the title this season despite the setback.

Plateau United's Chief Coach, Patrick Mancha, admitted there were struggles in the first round but remained positive about the team's desire to maintain a positive trajectory heading into the second round.

Five home wins and two away wins defined the outcome of the seven NPFL25 Match Day 20 games played across the country.

Plateau United's next match will be a trip to the north-western part of Nigeria, to Katsina's Mohammed Dikko Stadium, where they will face Katsina United.

Emmanuel Ihezuo joined the Peace Boys from City FC of Abuja, with more details of other signings to follow.
